AI Agents · Step-by-Step

Set up your first AI agent

You know what an AI agent is now. This walks you through setting one up yourself, one step at a time.

Works with whatever tool you like: Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus. Your progress saves, so you can stop and pick it up later.

Dead simple, paint by numbers. Take it at your own pace, there's no rush.

Step 1 of 10

Download your tool to your desktop

Pick one tool and install the desktop app. Don't use the web version. The desktop app is what lets AI take real actions for you.

If Claude asks you to install something called Git, do that first, then come back. Get Git here →

Step 2 of 10

Turn on a paid plan

Agents need a paid plan on whatever tool you picked. The free version blocks the action-taking features, and that's the whole point.

Example, Claude: the free account doesn't have Claude Cowork or Claude Code. You need at least the $20/mo plan to get them, and those are the agents that perform actions for you.
(3)
Step 3 of 10 · If you're switching tools

Export your memory

Only if you're moving to a new tool. Run this on the AI you use now to pull out everything it knows about you.

Staying on the same tool? Skip this one. Check the box and continue.
(4)
Step 4 of 10 · If you're switching tools

Save it and fix it up

Paste the output into a document or note. Read it over and edit it so it's accurate.

Don't paste old or wrong info into your new tool. Clean it up first.
Want to go deep? Most tools can export every detail, all your chats, and email it to you. It takes a while. In ChatGPT it's Settings → Data controls → Export data.
(5)
Step 5 of 10 · If you're switching tools

Load it into your new tool

Take your cleaned-up document and paste it into your new tool to add it to its memory.

Now your new agent knows who you are, right out of the gate.

Step 6 of 10

Add your connectors

An agent needs three things: a brain and memory (done, that's the AI) plus tools to work with. An assistant with no login to your email is useless. Same idea here.

1
In Claude, open Customize → Connectors. Click Add, then Browse connectors to see everything you can plug in:

2
For every action a tool can take, you choose. You stay in full control:

Step 7 of 10

Give your tool skills

Skills are SOPs for your agent: step-by-step instructions it can reuse. Two easy ways to make one:

1
Upload what you've got. Drop in an SOP or examples and say "turn this into a skill." Like your best emails becoming your email writing skill.
2
Do it together once. Have your agent walk through a task with you, like booking a flight your way, then say "turn this into a skill." Next time just say "use my flight booking skill."
In Claude, open Customize, click Skills, then Add to make one:

Step 8 of 10

The 3 skills I promised you

Before you build your own, grab these. Three ready-made skills that make your agent work harder for you. Add them whenever you're ready.

Step 9 of 10

What each one does

HHumanizerRewrites your AI's writing so it sounds like a real person, not a robot in a sweater vest. Bans the AI-giveaway words and shows you what it changed. Use it on anything client-facing.
FFact CheckerVerifies claims and checks sources. Use it before you say something on stage, post it online, or send it to a client.
PProcess InterviewerYour AI asks the right questions so it actually gets what you want. Use it for a fuzzy idea, a brain dump, or any task you want it to nail.

Step 10 of 10

Put your agent to work

Now just ask, in plain English. This is the whole payoff. Try something like:

Read my email inbox every morning at 6:00 a.m. and send me a summary of anything I need to reply to, anything that needs my attention, and anything that's overdue.

Have it ping you by Slack, text, or email. Set up as many background routines as you want.

One catch: your computer has to be on and awake. Leave it plugged in with the screen brightness all the way down, and it can run your routines overnight.

You built an AI agent

You went from chatting with AI to an agent that does real work for you.
